Emergency Tools to Keep in Your Car

Keeping an emergency set of tools in your trunk is a good idea. You never know what might happen and if you have a family, you definitely want to make sure that you are prepared.

So what kind of tools should you keep in your trunk?

Where you live can make a difference. If it’s mostly tropical, then you really don’t need anything for winter weather. And if you live somewhere where there is a long winter, you should factor that in as well.

Being prepared for a variety of situations is a valuable skill, having the right tools available to you will help you or another family in need.

  • A spare tire, obviously. But not only that, do you know how to access it? Some SUVs and vans have the tire suspended under the vehicle, you need to unscrew it from the trunk area. Make sure you practice taking it off, and keep it filled.
  • A type of fix-a-flat for true emergencies where you need to get to a safer location in order to have the tire looked at or fixed, or to be able to put the spare tire on more safely.
  • Spare jumper cables. You may need a jump and you don’t want to rely on someone else having jumper cables instead of you.
  • Duct tape, a towel, WD-40, and some plastic bags.
  • Flashlight, check the batteries at least once a year to make sure it still works.
  • Multi-tool – you may need a screwdriver, window breaker, or knife in an emergency situation. Keep the multi-tool in the glove compartment for easy access instead of the trunk.
  • During the winter, keep an extra blanket and ice scraper available. If you have kids, make sure you have several blankets for them as well.
  • Paper towels or toilet paper for long trips, extra water, and a little money will help you feel more prepared in case of an emergency or if your car breaks down.

Preparation is the key here. Hopefully you will never have a true emergency situation, but if you do you will know that you have basic supplies on hand to take care of your family. And, if you run into another family that is having an emergency, you may have the items that they don’t have – and you may truly make a difference.
